China Releases New Recycled Polyester Fiber Standard |
|
A look at China’s new national product standard, GB/T 40351-2021, for the ecological technical requirements of recycled polyester fibers. |

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that the Standardization Administration of China has issued a new national standard covering the ecological technical requirements for recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) fiber – GB/T 40351-2021 Ecological technical requirements for recycled Poly(ethylene terephthalate) fiber.
The standard follows increasing global demand for recycled polyester in the wake of the promotion of circular economies. It was included in China’s No. 11 announcement of approved national standards in 2021 and provides guidance to industry on the development and promotion of quality recycled polyester fibers.
It covers both:
• Undyed recycled polyester
• Spun-dyed recycled polyester
Manufacturers and users of other forms of recycled polyester can also refer to this document.
Recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers are made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste materials.
The standard includes technical requirements for:
• pH value
• Odor
• Free and hydrolyzed formaldehyde content
• Extractable heavy metal content
• Volatile organic compounds
• Residual surfactants
• Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)
• Other chemical residues
• Total phthalates
• Total chlorobenzenes and chlorinated toluenes
• Banned azo colorants
• Carcinogenic dyestuffs
• Allergenic dyestuffs
• Other harmful dyestuffs
The new standard came into effect on March 1, 2022.
