Fuentek Announces License of NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center Technology To 4DSP

Technology Developed For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) Enables Turnkey Fiber Optic System To Benefit Many Industries, Medicine.
Laura A. Schoppe, president of Fuentek, LLC (http://www.fuentek.com/), a local technology consulting firm that provides intellectual property (IP) and technology management services, has announced the successful license of a NASA technology by 4DSP as the latest in its series of technology transfer achievements for the space agency.

Developed at Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the licensed technology is a lightweight, compact, ultra-efficient fiber optic system that can process data from thousands of sensors at an unprecedented rate of 100 times per second, enabling real-time monitoring in harsh environments. The technology's fiber optics and high-speed algorithms yield a dramatically lower price per sensor for real-time monitoring applications.

Austin, Texas-based 4DSP plans to commercialize multiple products derived from Dryden's fiber optic sensing system. As part of this effort, the company is developing an even more compact product at a lighter weight and lower cost. Dryden's technology can be applied to many industries that would benefit from real-time strain monitoring, including civil engineering, transportation, oil and gas, renewable energy and medicine.

Fuentek played an integral role in the transfer of Dryden's IP to the commercial sector, providing research, strategic guidance, and marketing support. Fuentek supports Dryden and other offices in NASA's Innovative Partnerships Program under a contract established in 2007.

QUOTES:
"This licensing agreement is a key achievement for NASA and Fuentek," said Schoppe. "I am proud of how our team supported both Dryden and 4DSP to bring this licensing agreement to fruition."

"It is great to see Dryden's powerful innovations move into the commercial arena so that they can be used more broadly," said Danielle McCulloch, a senior consultant with Fuentek. "Most people are surprised to learn about the many different industries that can use and benefit from aeronautics-related technologies."

"The licensing of this NASA invention to 4DSP represents a major breakthrough and opens the door to widespread application of this remarkable sensing technology," said Lance Richards, an aerospace research manager at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center and co-inventor of the licensed technology.
