Auctioneer Aymeric Rouillac poses on June 7 at Cheverny by a Japanese chest that belonged to Cardinal Jules Mazarin (1602-16661). The wooden box was auctioned for $9.5 million to Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum on June 9 at a sale organized by the Chateau de Cheverny. A French man in London bought it in the 1970s and used it to store liquor and as a TV stand. When the man died, his children and auctioneers cleared his home. |
