SGS summarizes Georgian restrictions on food contact ceramics

SGS publishes SafeGuardS looking at Georgia’s technical regulation to restrict lead and cadmium in food contact ceramics.
SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 158.23 to provide stakeholders with an overview of Georgia’s new technical regulation on the restriction of lead and cadmium in food contact ceramics.

Georgia’s technical regulation is based on the European Union’s Directive 84/500/EEC, as amended. Important provisions in the regulation include:
• Establishing testing conditions and requirements for the migration of lead and cadmium (Annexes 1 and 2)
• Detailing the declaration of conformity (DoC) requirements for manufacturers and importers of the finished food contact ceramic product
• Specifying labeling information (Article 10 to Resolution No. 317 of June 5, 2018, on food contact materials and articles, Resolution 317/2018).
• Emphasizing the requirements for traceability (Article 12 to Resolution 317/2018)

SGS publishes SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about market and regulatory changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 158.23 summarizes Georgia’s new technical regulation and includes a table detailing lead and cadmium requirements and their effective date (January 1, 2026). It also contains important information relating to food contact ceramics placed onto the market before the effective date.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 158.23 for more information.
