SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 138.23 to provide stakeholders with an overview of Malaysia’s new trade descriptions order for the marking of pre-packaged goods.

Trade Descriptions (Marking of Pre-Packaged Goods) Order 2023 was issued on June 6, 2023, by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living. It applies to all pre-packaged goods manufactured in or imported into Malaysia.

The order states all pre-packed goods must be marked with the following information:

1. Indication of goods
2. Nominal quantity in unit measurements as specified in the first schedule
3. Quantity indication by count, expressed in numbers
4. Name and address of the wholesaler, producer, manufacturer or importer, as the case may be, in relation to the goods
5. For pre-packaged goods that contain solid goods in liquid medium, the nett weight and drained weight shall be marked as appropriate:
a. Nett weight if the liquid medium is not meant to be left over after use
b. Nett weight and drained weight if the liquid medium is meant to be left over after use, or if it might or might not be left over

SGS has published SafeGuardS 138.23 to give stakeholders an overview of the new requirements. In addition to details of the marking requirements it also contains a table with details of tolerable deficiencies.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 138.23 for more information.
