South Korea Prohibits BPA, BBP and DBP in Food Contact Products for Young Children

On January 9, 2019, South Korea amended its food contact standards for articles used by young children to include prohibitions on the use of BPA, BBP and DBP. This will become effective on January 1, 2020.
South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) published Notification 2019-2 in January 2019, thereby prohibiting the use of certain phthalates in food contact materials and articles (FCMs) for young children.

The notification amended ‘Standards and Specifications for Food Utensils, Containers and Packages’, making several changes, including:
• Expanding the prohibition on the use of bisphenol A (BPA), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) and di-butyl phthalate (DBP) from baby bottles to all FCMs for infants and young children
• Revising the specifications for polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) for the packaging of desiccants
• Revising the wording for recycled synthetic plastics

Stakeholders should be aware the Notification came into force on January 9, 2019, and the provision to prohibit BPA, BBP and DBP in FCMs for infants and children will become effective on January 1, 2020.
